5th Gear?

Just to satisfy my curiosity, do any of you know if the 5th gear that Suzuki added to the Savage a few years ago increased the actual top-end or did it just reduce the revolutions, making for less stress on the motor and rider? I'm no mechanic, but every once in a while these crazy thoughts enter my mind!
